Chp. 17, the Clouds Burst

CHARGE!!!!
In the morning, Bard returns to get Thorin to accept an agreement. When the dwarf again refuses, Bard reveals the Arkenstone. Thorin is crushed, and he turns to Bilbo in rage when the hobbit reveals that he is the one who gave Bard the treasure. Thorin is about to have a Major temper-tantrum, but then one of the messengers throws off his cloak and is Gandalf. The wizard commands Thorin to let Bilbo speak. The hobbit claims that he only took his fair share of the treasure as his contract as burglar had said. Thorin has no choice but to agree, and he offers to pay a fourteenth part of the treasure to regain the stone. The men and elves like this. Thorin, however, secretly hopes that before they make the exchange, other dwarves, who are marching toward the mountain with an army under the leadership of Dain, will be able to capture the stone by force. The new dwarf army threatens the elves and men, when they are about to fight Gandalf tells them that a new danger has come: an army of goblins and Wargs who intend to take the treasure for themselves. The dwarves, elves, and humans are thus united against the goblins and Wargs in what is called the Battle of the Five Armies. The end seems close at hand when the hobbit’s keen eyes spy something in the distant skies: the great eagles are flying toward the battlefield. At that moment, however, a stone falls from the mountain and hits Bilbo on the head, and he loses consciousness.

Chp. 19, the Last Stage

People he actually enjoys company with!

The dead are buried, and Dain is crowned the new King under the Mountain. Bard is the new Master of Lake Town. Soon, it is time for the hobbit to return home. He travels with Gandalf and Beorn, taking the long way north around Mirkwood, for nothing could make him to enter that forest again. They spend most of the harsh winter at Beorn’s house. Finally, Bilbo and Gandalf travel the last, long stretch of road back to the hobbit lands. Approaching his home, Bilbo receives a wonderful surprise. He has been presumed dead, and the contents of his hill are being auctioned off. Bilbo is never again really accepted by the other hobbits. They view his adventuring with skepticism, and his return with gold and tales of dragons and war only confirms the hobbits’ suspicion that Bilbo has gotten in over his head. Most important, he's still alive and enjoys the visit of his other friends.

Chp. 18, the Return Journey

Going back isn't as fun.

When Bilbo wakes up, he is still lying on the side of the mountain, but he is otherwise unharmed. He sees that his side has won the battle against the goblins and Wargs. A man comes searching for Bilbo but cannot find him until the hobbit remembers to take off his magic ring. Bilbo is carried back to the camp where Gandalf waits and is delighted to see the hobbit alive. However, Bilbo must say farewell to Thorin who is dying. Thorin asks Bilbo’s forgiveness for being so selfish.Fili and Kili have also been killed, but the rest of the dwarves have survived. The eagles were a great help, or so says Gandalf. Yet things still might have gone badly were it not for the sudden appearance of Beorn in the shape of a bear. This sent the rest of the goblins scattering, and now they are all either dead or in hiding.

Chp. 16, A Thief in the Night

Searching for something you'll never find is always a waste of time...
With Thorin being overly obsessed about the arkenstone and the dwarves worried about the army on their doorstep, Bilbo decides that he must find a solution. With the help of the ring, he sneaks away from the mountain at night and into the camp of the lake men and the wood elves. There, he reveals himself and is brought before the leaders, Bard and the Elvenking.. He gives them the arkenstone. He gives it to Bard to be used for bargaining. They ask him to stay in the camp for his safety, but Bilbo decides to return to the mountain. On his way out of the camp, he runs into Gandalf. Gandalf has just arrived from his other affairs to see the end of this adventurer. Newly hopeful, Bilbo sneaks back to the mountain unnoticed.

Chp. 15, The Gathering of the Clouds

Is this source reliable?

A raven informs Bilbo and the dwarves of Smaug’s death, and they are super happy. However, this doesn't last long, as the raven goes on to to tell of the huge army of humans and elves marching toward them, as well as the suffering of Lake Town’s people. Thorin claims the treasure as his inheritance and plans to fight for it, however, regardless of what the people of Lake Town have suffered.Under Thorin’s orders, the company retreats to the mountain and protects it by building a formidable wall at the main gate. From there, they watch as Bard and elves approach. Bard tells them that he killed Smaug and that Lake Town has been destroyed. He asks that the dwarves be generous in sharing the wealth of the mountain.. Thorin refuses. He feels that he owes the humans nothing since the gold belonged to his people originally. The mountain is declared at war: nothing and no one will be let in or out if elves and men can help it. Bilbo would gladly share the treasure. However, no dwarf questions Thorin, and the hobbit has no say in the dwarves’ decision.

Chp. 14, Fire and Water

Tonight, we will be serving roast Lake Town.

Meanwhile, Smaug flies toward Lake Town to get revenge for the cup. The people of Lake Town see the dragon coming from a long way off  and sound the alarm. Their readiness is of little help, for Smaug flies over the town and lights every roof on fire. The men’s arrows bounce off the dragon’s hide. When most of the men have abandoned the city, one man, Bard, the captain of the archers, readies his last arrow. Suddenly, a thrush lands on his shoulder and tells Bard to watch for the dragon’s weak spot at his left breast. Bard looks, sees the open patch, and shoots. Itgoes through the chink in the dragon’s armor and kills the dragon, destroying the rest of Lake Town as he dies. Bard manages to dive safely into the water. Some blame the dwarves for waking the dragon, but most assume that they too are dead. Then the lake men remember the gold in the Lonely Mountain, and they think eagerly of how the wealth could rebuild their town. The elf king hears of this and with the lake men, marches to the supposedly unattended treasure.

Chp. 13, Not at Home

Huh... who knew it was actually Hobbit sized?

Smaug guesses from Bilbo’s riddles that the company is somehow involved with the men of Lake Town, so he flies there to get revenge. The hobbit and dwarves hide in the dark passage until they can't wait any longer. They slowly walk down towards Smaug’s lair. When Bilbo determines that Smaug is gone, the dwarves run out to the treasure super excited, remembering the happy days. Bilbo takes only a few things. One of them is the Arkenstone, a priceless gem that Thorin seeks but which the hobbit hides from him. Bilbo also finds a marvelous coat of mail made of mithril, a strong metal that is more valuable than silver or gold.
After they're done rummaging through the treasure Thorin leads the company through the passages of the mountain and to the source of the River. They still don't know what to do with Smaug when he returns. In the meantime, they are desperately hungry, so they follow the river down from the mountain to an old guard-post cavern. There, they rest, eat, and wdream about treasure.

Chp. 12, Inside Information

I've been watching you!

The dark passage is right in front of their eyes, and what do they do? They ''nominate'' Bilbo to go down it. of course. Bilbo enters, puts on his invisibility ring, and tip-toes into Smaug’s lair. Smaug is red and gold, and a hide as strong as a diamond. Bilbo is terrified, but takes a single golden cup from one of the piles. He then runs back to the dwarves, who are happy to see he took the cup.Bilbo’s theft does not go unseen by Smaug, who counts his unused treasure. When he awakens, he is angry to discover that the cup is missing. Meanwhile, the dwarves and Bilbo huddle inside the secret passage, terrified. After a while, Smaug returns to his den and falls asleep. The hobbit returns to the dragon’s lair to spy, only to find the dragon is being watchful and Smaug is waiting for Bilbo. Although he cannot see Bilbo because of the ring, Smaug smells Bilbo and greets him. Bilbo is smart, though, and answers Smaug only in riddles. Sneakily, the hobbit flatters Smaug into displaying his thick-skinned underbelly, revealing an open patch in Smaug’s armor above his left breast.Bilbo rushes back up the passage, just outrunning the dragon’s flames. The hobbit tells the dwarves all that he has learned while a thrush sits nearby and seems to listen. They then hear the roar of the dragon once more and shut the door to the passage just before an avalanche comes down upon it. They are trapped inside the mountain...

Chp. 11, On the Doorstep

How exciting to be right on the dragons doorstep.
The company travels to the mountain. They can see the front gate steaming from the dragon. After a long time spent searching they soon find the secret door. They all climb up to the spot with rope except for  Bombour and another dwarve thinking  that the ropes will snap under his weight.  The only problem is how to get the door open.    They have the key but there is a large rock in the way and they don't want to wait months for the correct moon to come up.  They try pushing it open and everything but the boulder in front of it won't budge.  Bilbo sits there for hours trying to think of a way to open it.  They forget the poem but when the moon begins to rise and the thrush knocked the boulder began to move and they quickly grabbed the key and opened the door.  They were staring into a secret passageway.

Chp. 10, A Warm Welcome

Well that looks like a good place to stay.
The company reaches a town called Esgaroth.  When thorin tells them that he is decendant of the King Under the Mountain everyone in the town is happy thinking that they will destroy the dragon.  Everyone that is except for the Master of the town who thinks their a hoax and is worried that they will steal power.  But he can not deny what the people want so he feeds them and everyone in the town treats them like kings and they get their every wish.  After a while they ask for supplies to go defeat the dragon and say that they will be leaving.  This suprises the master because he did not expect them to actually go to defeat the dragon.  He gives them horses, boats, and other provisions.  The company is now in the shadow of the mountain and still have no idea  how to kill Smaug and obtain the treasure.

Chp. 9, Barrels out of Bond

Floating down the river should be easy, right?

Right after Bilbo and the rest of the dwarves escape the spiders, they are surrounded by a company of wood elves and brought blindfolded to the Elf king’s halls. Bilbo, still wearing his ring, remains unknown. The other dwarves are brought before the king and questioned. Like Thorin, they refuse to reveal their plan for the treasure for fear that the elves will demand some of it. Also, like Thorin the dwarves are thrown into the dungeon. Meanwhile, Bilbo, having followed the captured dwarves, walks invisibly through the halls, whispering to the dwarves in their cells and plotting an escape. The elves exchange goods with the men of Lake Town through barrels that are floated on a river that flows under the elves's castle. Empty barrels are sent floating back down the river from a storeroom. In the storeroom, Bilbo catches a guard passed out (from to much drink). He steals the guardsman’s keys, frees the dwarves, and puts his plan into action. He helps pack each dwarf into an empty barrel just before the elves return and shove the barrels into the river; then, still invisible, he hops onto an empty barrel. The trapdoors open and the dwarves speed out along the river toward Lake Town and Smaug!!!!!

Chp. 8, Flies and Spiders

Are those bones in there?!?
As they travel into the forest, they here Gandalf calling after them to stay on the path. Little did the company know that they actually should have payed attention. After a few days, they come to a stream that Beorn had warned them not to touch. They cross using a boat already there, but Bombur falls in and is put into a sleep that lasts for days. The rest of the party is forced to carry him. Hungry and tired this is the last thing they want. One night, they see a flicker of lights in the trees and, ignoring the warnings of Gandalf, they leave the path and move toward the lights. They see food!!!!! However, the moment they burst into the clearing, the lights are snuffed out, and the dwarves and Bilbo can hardly find one another. Soon, Bilbo stops hearing voices and, So tired, leans against a tree to sleep. When Bilbo awakens, his legs are bound with sticky thread and a BIG spider is advancing toward him, he kills the spider and feels much more confident in himself. He then goes in search of the dwarves. To his horror, he finds them all hanging from a tree, tied up in the webs of the many spiders that sit atop the branches. Bilbo throws a few stones at the spiders and then leads them away from the dwarves by yelling. Fortunately, they can't see him (for those who haven't put it together, he's wearing the ring.) so the spiders cannot find him.Having led the spiders away, Bilbo slips back and cuts the dwarves free.  The spiders chase the dwarves in pursuit, just when they are about to become spider dinner the spiders suddenly disappear, and the dwarves realizes that they themselves have retreated into one of the clearings used by elves. There, they rest to ponder their next course of action. A moment later, they realize with horror that Thorin is missing.Unknowing to Bilbo and the dwarves, Thorin was taken prisoner by the elves....

Chp. 7, Queer Lodgings

I didn't know people could be that large.
Gandalf takes the company to a man named Beorn.  Gandalf has never met Beorn but has heard of him.  Beorn can turn into a very large bear and is a very large man.  Having the dwarves come two at a time while he told Beorn their story beorn agrees to help them.  He feeds them and then leaves to see if their story is true.  He comes back and helps them get ready to leave and gives them ponies, food and equiptment.  He also tells them not to leave the math in mirkwood.  when they reach the end of Mirkwood they must send the ponies back and Gandalf leaves them to take care of other buisiness.  What will happen next?

Chp. 6, Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire

And now their being fried

When Bilbo Stumbles outside he finds that he made it to the other side of the cruel mountain pass. Walking along, he finds upon Gandalf and the dwarves, after he reveals himself  Gandalf encourages the company to get moving again since only the sunlight is keeping the goblins from coming after them, they continue on their journey. Suddenly, they hear the howling of wolves and barely have time to climb into the trees before the wolves descend upon them. (They are actually called Wargs)   The Wargs are allies of the goblins, and they quickly tell the goblins of the situation. The goblins begin to arrive and light fires under the trees in which Gandalf, the dwarves, and Bilbo are hiding.Luckily for the them, the Lord of the Eagles has seen the commotion from his roost high in the mountains. With a number of other eagles, he swoops down, picks up the marooned travelers, and flies them to safety. The eagles are friends of Gandalf’s and enemies of the goblins. They are happy to provide food and rest for the weary travelers, who then continue on their journey.

Chp. 5, Riddles in the Dark

That's a little scary...
Just when Bilbo thinks his life is bad enough, he finds himself lost in the bottom of a mountain without the dwarves and Gandalf. He wanders off in the cave until he stumbles upon a strange and mysterious ring. He puts it into his pocket and continues wandering until he finds himself walking into a lake, he decides to just stay where he is until he sees something that he that he wishes for the rest of his life he never saw... A pair of eyes, glowing at him and whispering to itself. He soon learns that the strange thing is named Gollum and the only way Bilbo stays alive is beating Gollum at a game of riddles. He soon beats Gollum and also learns that the ring makes him invisible, also that it was Gollum's ring. Gollum believes that Bilbo escaped and goes up to the front entrance while actually the little hobbit is following him. He soon slips through the Goblins gates and past Gollum and is on the mountain by himself... for now.

Chp. 4 Over Hill and Under Hill

Well that sucks...
Well the trip through the mountain isn't going well.  It was a hard enough hike before the thunderstorm and the giants throwing rocks.  They find shelter in a cave.  The cave seems safe but when a crack in the wall grows goblins come out and capture all of them except for Gandalf.  The goblins eat their ponies and plan to eat them but Gandalf saves them .  There is a quick fight and the Great Goblin is killed.  While they are escaping Bilbo is knocked and grabbed by a goblin.  DA DA DAHHHHH.

Chp. 3, A Short Rest

Heading to the last homely house.
Well after the companies trip through the woods I think they deserve a rest and that's exactly what they get when they visit the elves in Rivendell.  Elrond the chief of the elves lets them stay in the Last Homely House.  The company is now well fed and happy.  Maybe the mountains won't be to bad.

Chp. 2, Roast Mutton

Ooooo someone got caught!
On the first leg of their journey the dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf already run into trouble... What were they to do, of course send the burglar (Bilbo) to investigate the mysterious light.  The light ends up being a group of three trolls campfire.  Bilbo doesn't want to go back empty handed so he tries to pick pocket one of the trolls.  Well that was not the smartest move because the trolls catch him and when the dwarves come to see what happened they are captured.  Gandalf was not with them but soon comes back.  He tricks the trolls into arguing all night and so when the sun rises they turn to stone.  To make things even better they find the trolls cave nearby and are able to take more food supplies to Bilbo's delight and fancy elvish weapons. The company starts the next leg of their journey happy and excited. Hopefully, the rest of the trip will be easy...

Chp. 1, An Unexpected Party

Here comes the party...
Bilbo Baggins, a quiet hobbit living in a comfortable hobbit hole is greeted by a quite unexpected person. Gandalf the Wizard! The wizard offers him, Bilbo Baggins an adventure. HA, Bilbo Baggins going on an adventure, yeah right. So he respectfully declines the "offer". But what he didn't realize it wasn't a choice, he was going on an adventure, whether he wanted to or not. The next day an even more unexpected party arrives at his door step,  Thirteen dwarves! Who all talk about crazy adventures of far away lands and how as soon as this adventure is over they will be so rich and famous. Poor Bilbo didn't even know what to think but how terrified he was! He goes to bed and thinks it was all just a really bad dream and wakes to find, well it wasn't a  dream after all the dwarves were waiting for him at the local tavern. He rushes out and they set off on an adventure so big, they haven't even realized it yet.
